The Lexington Humane Society is helping Central Kentucky to Give Love, Teach Love and Adopt Love

The MISSION of the Lexington Humane Society (LHS) is to advocate for the compassionate treatment of animals, educate the community on responsible, lifelong pet ownership, and promote adoption as the best option when searching for a new pet.

Why is it important?

LHS is the largest pet adoption agency in Central Kentucky, they educate the community on responsible pet care and the compassionate treatment of all animals, and spay/neuter the pets of qualifying families at a low cost.

As a result of LHS’s numerous programs, around 1,000 LHS animals every year are saved through their network of invaluable foster parents and 5,000 homeless animals every year find loving homes through LHS’s adoption centers.

How do they do it?

Founded in 1889 by J. William Sayre, the Lexington Humane Society (LHS) is a 501(c)3 organization solely dependent on private donations, grants and community support. They receive no operating support from the government or national animal welfare groups, including HSUS or the ASPCA. The LHS encourages responsible pet ownership and works to end pet homelessness through pet adoption, spay/neuter, education, and community outreach programs that are accessible, high-quality, efficient, transparent, and fiscally accountable.

The programs provided by LHS revolve around three core strategies of “Give Love, Teach Love, Adopt Love.” The Give Love programs involve foster care, a pet food pantry for pet owners struggling to feed pets, spay and neuter programs for dogs and cats and specialized medical treatments for critical needs animals. Teach Love programs include “Critter Camp” for kids promoting the compassionate treatment of animals. Other teach love programs include shelter tours, humane education, and volunteer programs. Adopt Love aims to strengthen pet adoption and programs specially designed to train owners to keep their and care for pets.
