This community-based non profit has been saving land in Napa Valley for 44 years and still counting.

The MISSION of the Napa Land Trust (NLT) is to preserve the character of Napa by permanently protecting land.

Why is it important?

Established in 1976 by seven founding members, today the Napa Land Trust has 1,200 active members and supporters. In their 44-year history, they have completed 225 projects and protected over 81,000 acres of land, equal to 15% of Napa County.

In addition to completing 144 conservation easements with private landowners across the county, the Land Trust has assisted a number of cities and other agencies to protect land for public use. By partnering with state and local agencies, the Land Trust has preserved more than 26,100 acres of beautiful open space, which are now public parks and recreational areas anyone can use.

How do they do it?

Napa Land Trust protects land in Napa County through three main conservation initiatives; Conservation Easements, the Permanent Preserve Network and a stewardship program.  NLT acquires land and provides conservation easements to individual landowners. Their robust land stewardship program includes the restoration of conservation properties through a permanent preserve network, as well as private and public funding for land conservation. In addition, Napa Land Trust also benefits the community by developing long-term land protection strategies and priorities.
