Alpha House of Tampa's mission offers homeless pregnant women and mothers with young children safe housing and the tools they need to become self-sufficient and effective responsible parents.
Why is it important?
Homelessness is undoubtedly a growing social issue in the United States. It is estimated that 1 in less than 200 people in our country will experience homelessness at some point at least for a year. Yet, what the public might not realize is that women account for up to 40% of the homeless population, and that 85% of homeless families are headed by single mothers.
While pregnancy signifies the birth of a new life or an extension of family, it can also mean an almost scary increase in living expenses. When you’re homeless, the access to various maternal care are even more limited, resulting in health complications for both the mothers and infants.
How do they do it?
Alpha House of Tampa believes that every member of the community deserves the tools to create and maintain self-sufficiency. Since 1981, they have provided numerous services including safe and secure emergency shelter, intensive case management, community referrals, housing search services, child development assessments, and post-shelter care.
They accept all members of the community and strive to expand their services to all manner of family, including single dads, multi-generational and two-parent families. Belonging to a community means supporting those who need it most. Motivated by seeing lasting improvement in their clients’ lives, the team at Alpha House tries to stay in touch with them as long as necessary. In order to truly support the local community, they also have a wide array of partners including Children’s Board of Hillsborough County, The Godfrey Hotel & Cabanas (Tampa), PEOPLE Inc. and many more.
