Big Sur Health Center (BSHC) provides quality healthcare through traditional and complementary approaches that are culturally sensitive and patient-centered. It is their quest to be a life-long healthcare partner for all in Big Sur, regardless of need or ability to pay.

Why is it important?

BSHC was founded in September 1979, through a local grass-roots effort to meet the needs of the rural Big Sur community through its mission to provide quality comprehensive medical care to all in Big Sur regardless of ability to pay.

The presence of BSHC is crucial to the welfare of this community as the only medical facility between the Monterey Peninsula (30 miles to the north) and Cambria (70 miles to the south). BSHC plays a vital role in the local community, serving the health care needs of the population by providing local, culturally, and linguistically appropriate, affordable, quality medical care.

The hazardous coastline of Big Sur, combined with extreme weather conditions, road closures, and frequent large-scale fires, underscores the critical need for the local presence of BSHC. Our centrally located facility is easily accessible to residents and tourists with urgent care needs. During road closures and other community disasters, BSHC provides 24-hour-on-call service, home welfare visits, medication service (at times, via helicopter transport), and coordination with local emergency teams.

How do they do it?

The Big Sur Health Center plays a vital role in serving the health and wellness needs of the Big Sur community by offering a range of medical services and programs tailored to the area's unique needs and challenges. The nonprofit health clinic provides quality acute and preventive health care services that are culturally and linguistically appropriate, affordable and cost-effective.

With an emphasis on preventive and wellness care, basic services include men’s and women’s physicals, women’s health care, pediatrics and chronic care management. This ensures that community members have access to healthcare services without needing to travel long distances.

Given the remote nature of Big Sur, having access to urgent medical care is crucial. The health center is available for treatment of illnesses, basic surgical procedures, and stabilization of more serious conditions for transfer to the hospital on the Monterey Peninsula, if needed.

In times of crisis such as natural disasters or public health emergencies, the health center plays a critical role in providing medical support and coordinating response efforts to ensure the well-being of residents and visitors. Overall, the Big Sur Health Center serves as a vital resource for the community.

How you can #TravelKindly:

  • While BSHC does not have one-day programs for travelers, they are available to provide healthcare services should you become ill or injured while traveling in Big Sur.
  • Locals can get involved by volunteering to help with their our annual health fair, which is free to the community, the annual fundraising event, Big Sur Foragers Festival, and aid stations and other tasks to help support the Big Sur International Marathon which provides grants to Big Sur Health Center and other Big Sur nonprofits.

About Treebones Resort

“Glamping in Big Sur, California”—what a musical sentence. You could make it a little better, though: glamping in Big Sur without leaving a traceTreebones Resort is a completely off-the-grid eco-glamping resort that swears by the Big Sur pledge: leave no trace (pick up your trash), be mindful of the impact of your actions, and protect and respect Big Sur’s natural resources.

Treebones takes the pledge to heart: for all electrical needs, it utilizes a mix of clean-burning, California-made microturbines and solar energy; their restaurant offers dishes created from organic products grown in the resort’s gardens, and all the scraps are fed to “twenty happy chickens,” or composted in an organic garden. The resort also boasts one of the most creative green-initiatives I’ve encountered so far: instead of offering plastic stir- sticks, Treebones provides guests with uncooked pasta noodles!”
