Bring together people and resources to close the gap between human rights in principle and human rights in practice.

 

Why is it important?

Founded in 2015 by 49 individuals and six organizations from across Croatia, the Solidarna Foundation brings together diverse knowledge, experience, and professions in a shared commitment to advancing philanthropy and protecting human rights. Solidarna acts as a trusted partner to civil society, public institutions, socially responsible businesses, and donors, working to ensure that communities remain places of freedom, safety, and dignity for all. Acting as a different kind of foundation, Solidarna’s goals are; to start from the community and stay rooted in it, supporting individuals and initiatives actively working to protect human rights, to remain independent and accountable, free from political affiliation, while maintaining full transparency to the public, to mobilize diverse resources, funding, knowledge, skills, time, and networks from many sources and to build partnerships on trust, grounded in transparency, cooperation, and shared responsibility.

How do they do it?

Solidarna (the SOLIDARNA Foundation for Human Rights and Solidarity) works in Croatia to close the gap between human rights as legal principles and human rights as lived realities by mobilizing citizens, donors, civil society, and institutions around practical, community-driven solutions, combining financial support with knowledge, advocacy, and cross-sector partnerships to ensure help reaches people when and where it is needed most. Through its community funds, Solidarna turns solidarity into action. The Croatian Women’s Fund supports women and children affected by domestic and sexual violence while advancing gender equality through prevention, survivor support, reproductive rights, and economic empowerment; the Desa & Jerko Baković Fund invests in children and young people facing poverty, exclusion, or discrimination by providing scholarships, educational resources, mentoring, and long-term guidance to help them complete their education and build stability; Fund 5.5 delivers rapid and longer-term crisis support, most notably during the 2020 Petrinja earthquake, channeling large-scale public solidarity into emergency relief and recovery. Solidarna’s broader foundation work strengthens human rights defenders and grassroots initiatives across Croatia. Together, these efforts ensure that rights in Croatia are not just guaranteed on paper, but actively protected, accessible, and sustained in everyday life.
