Charity Mission

A champion for the environment by educating, advocating, implementing and celebrating sustainable practices in Coronado and beyond.  Emerald Keepers strives to help preserve Coronado’s coastal community for generations to come.

Why is it important?

Emerald Keepers is a grassroots non-profit leading a growing community-based effort to care for this coastal community, promote environmental stewardship, and ensure Coronado’s sustainability for generations to come.  Emerald Keepers’ mission is to educate the community to develop and celebrate more sustainable practices and strive to be a model city for the health of our oceans, our beach community, and the world.

An Emerald Keeper is a person who cares for the Southern California coastal community of Coronado and works to REDUCE waste, materials, and energy use; REUSE items rather than discarding, RECYCLE whenever possible; REFUSE single-use plastics; and RETHINK ways of doing things to embrace a greener, cleaner Coronado — one that is Emerald Green, Ocean Blue.

How do they do it?

Emerald Keepers is a dedicated environmental steward in Coronado, championing sustainability through education, advocacy, and action. With a mission to preserve the coastal community for generations to come, the organization empowers residents, businesses, and visitors to embrace eco-conscious practices. Through dynamic educational programs, Emerald Keepers fosters environmental awareness in local schools, inspiring young minds to become future sustainability leaders. Their advocacy efforts influence city policies, promoting initiatives like reducing single-use plastics, posting water and air quality reports, enhancing recycling programs, and protecting marine ecosystems. On the ground, Emerald Keepers organizes community cleanups, promotes sustainable and native landscaping, has installed marine skimmers to clean local waterways, and co-hosts Fix-It Clinics to repair household items, ensuring that sustainability becomes an integral part of daily life. They also celebrate environmental achievements with events such as the Emerald Green Ocean Blue Business Designation and Earth Day festivities, recognizing those who lead by example. By intertwining education with tangible action, Emerald Keepers continue to drive meaningful change, safeguarding Coronado’s natural beauty and fragile coastal environment for years to come.

Charity Mission

Advocate for animal welfare by providing adoption and rehabilitation services to animals while fostering a more educated community.

Why is it important?

Since its founding in 2003, The Pacific Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) of Coronado has played an essential role in protecting the community’s animals through its commitment to diagnosing, treating, and rehabilitating all treatable and manageable pets in its care. They work tirelessly to secure permanent homes through thoughtful adoptions and rescue partnerships, proudly maintaining a record of never euthanizing healthy animals with treatable conditions. As Coronado’s designated sheltering and pet-licensing provider, PAWS takes in every legally owned animal, from dogs and cats to exotic mammals, birds, and reptiles, many of whom arrive with significant medical or behavioral needs. By focusing adoption efforts exclusively on animals who can be safely and compassionately rehabilitated, PAWS ensures both high-quality care and responsible placement, reinforcing their importance to the welfare of the entire community.

How do they do it?

PAWS of Coronado champions animal welfare by offering compassionate adoption and rehabilitation services that give vulnerable cats and dogs a second chance at life. Through attentive medical care, behavioral support, and a thoughtful matchmaking process, they ensure that every animal is placed in a safe, loving home. At the same time, PAWS strengthens the community through education by hosting outreach programs, volunteer opportunities, and responsible-pet-ownership initiatives that empower residents to better understand and care for the animals who share their island. PAWS endeavors to rescue all “unhealthy” and “untreatable” animals by providing a range of services including standard of care diagnostics, soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, behavior modification and specialty interventions.  Through these efforts, PAWS has saved many of such labeled animals and they take great pride in the support they are able to provide for all animals in Coronado.
