Since 1845, the Society for the Protection of Animals has been there to lend shelter, find homes and provide care to our furry friends in France.

The MISSION of La Societe Protectrice des Animaux (SPA) is to fight against animal cruelty and abandoning, to rescue and shelter mistreated and abandoned animals, to find new homes for animals who’s owners can no longer afford them, to raise awareness for animal protection amongst young people, to promote responsible ownership and to work with authorities on all issues regarding animal protection.

Why is it important?
  • Established in 1845, La SPA (Society for the Protection of Animals) is the first and oldest animal protection nonprofit in France. In 2018 alone: 44,147 animals were rescued, 38,129 animals were adopted into safe homes, over 100,000 animals were given veterinary care by La SPA and 11,000 investigations of animal cruelty were conducted.

How do they do it?
  • While based in Paris, SPA has established 62 rescue centers throughout France that work in concert to provide shelter, sterilizations, awareness for young people concerning animal safety and cruelty, help provide tips for responsible ownership, and importantly, find rehabilitated or abandoned animals new homes.
  • The SPA also conducts investigations to verify the merits of abuse reported every day to shelters, SPA Houses or the Investigations Department. For this purpose, the SPA has a national network of volunteer Delegate-Investigators and a team of salaried Inspectors working throughout France.
