The Epilepsy Foundation Arizona is aiming for a future without epilepsy

The MISSION of the Epilepsy Foundation AZ (EFA) is to lead the fight to overcome the challenges of living with epilepsy and to accelerate therapies to stop seizures, find cures and save lives.

Why is it important?

One in 10 adults will have a seizure sometime during their life and over 77,000 Arizonans are affected by epilepsy. 1 in 26 Americans will also develop epilepsy at some point in their lives. Epilepsy is more common than MS, Parkinson’s, cerebral palsy, and muscular dystrophy combined, yet receives the least amount of funding.

On March 30th, 2012, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released its report, Epilepsy across the Spectrum.  The IOM report recognizes epilepsy as a spectrum of disorders that involves more than 25 syndromes. In fact, seizures vary in frequency and severity, and exact a toll on quality of life that affects not only people living with epilepsy, but their families and surrounding communities. By acknowledging the complexity of the disorder and the extreme variances in its impact on people with epilepsy, there is hope this will lead to a better outcome for all of the groups in the spectrum.

How do they do it?

Since 1973, the Epilepsy Foundation of Arizona has been dedicated to the welfare of people with epilepsy. The Foundation has developed public education programs that foster community awareness to improve healthcare, and have made community support programs available to all persons affected by epilepsy free of charge.

EFA also continually provides seizure first-aid training throughout Arizona and offers a myriad of volunteer opportunities for those willing to aid in their mission to prevent, control, and cure epilepsy through services, education, and outreach.
