Charity Mission

Promote the development and well-being of the Portuguese community through developing social, educational, sports, leisure and cultural activities.

Why is it important?

The Casa do Povo do Concelho de Olhão was originally founded in 1934 in Moncarapacho and, since 1973, has served the entire municipality of Olhão, Portugal, standing as a heartfelt institution dedicated to the well‑being of its local community. As a nonprofit, it serves residents across the parishes, including Olhão, Moncarapacho e Fuseta, Quelfes, and Pechão, welcoming over 2,900 members alongside countless individuals who benefit from its programs. Its mission is to foster social cohesion, support families in need, empower seniors through University Sénior programs, and offer cultural, leisure, educational, sporting, and training activities that enhance quality of life for all ages. Inspired by the original purpose of Portugal’s Casas do Povo, it upholds deep roots in rural and coastal social cooperation, helping communities thrive through solidarity, lifelong learning, and inclusive initiatives. Through its community‑driven mission, the Casa do Povo is an essential anchor in the life of Olhão and its people.

How do they do it?

In the heart of Portugal’s southernmost Algarve region, the Casa do Povo do Concelho de Olhão provides a blend of social support, education, culture, and community engagement ensuring that every individual, whether a senior, a family in need, or a person with disabilities, has access to resources that enhance quality of life. Its programs span from the Universidade Sénior, which offers lifelong learning and social activities for older adults, to cultural and sporting events that bring neighbors together, as well as training workshops that build skills and confidence in younger generations. Looking ahead, the creation of the Activity Center for Training and Inclusion (CACI) will provide tailored occupational activities for young adults with severe disabilities, fostering inclusion and independence. Through partnerships, volunteer engagement, and a deep commitment to solidarity, Casa do Povo transforms its values into tangible actions.

When day labor and other work requests come into the administration phone, they will be posted on a bulletin board for those living in the transitional housing apartments. Those not already working and with the appropriate skill set can contact the person needing short-term labor to make arrangements. It is not very likely that a call coming in can be filled on the same day as the call is received. As funds allow, people living in the transitional apartments or staying at the shelter can apply for a limited number of salary-supported positions in the community. A portion of their hourly wages would be reimbursed to employers, and staff would support both employer and employee in ensuring a successful match.
