The MISSION of Berry Good Food Foundation (BGFF) is to support a local and regenerative food system in San Diego and Baja California. They empower their community by building bridges between farmers, chefs, scientists, and citizens to challenge the industrial food system while advocating for access to healthy food for all.

Why is it important?

The Berry Good Food Foundation plays a crucial role in promoting sustainable food systems, fostering community resilience, and enhancing food security in the San Diego and Baja California regions. At this time, 1 in 4 San Diegans are experiencing food insecurity and lack access to healthy, fresh foods. By advocating for local, organic, and regeneratively grown foods, the foundation encourages healthier eating habits and supports local farmers and producers. Additionally, the foundation provides educational programs, workshops, and resources to empower individuals and communities to make informed decisions about their food choices, promoting environmental stewardship and social equity. Through its initiatives, the Berry Good Food Foundation helps address food-related challenges such as hunger, food waste, and environmental degradation, ultimately improving the overall well-being and quality of life for the people of San Diego and Baja California.

How do they do it?

Berry Good Food Foundation empowers its community by building bridges between farmers, chefs, scientists, and citizens to challenge the industrial food system while advocating for access to healthy food for all. They run a variety of inspiring, rewarding, and thoughtful programs and events designed to entertain and enlighten through the tenets of Education and Raising Awareness, Connecting and Building Relationships, as well as through Support and Reinforcing Positive Change. Many of these programs also help them raise funds for ongoing initiatives such as their Garden Grants, awarded annually to K-12 schools and community educational organizations with garden projects that support healthy food education in San Diego County.

How you can #TravelKindly:

  • Travelers and locals are welcome to touch base with BGFF program staff about events happening during the duration of their stay. They are always open to volunteers joining in their grassroots efforts in their local edible garden spaces. Team building opportunities and group visits are also encouraged with advanced notice.
  • Take a cooking class taught by various community chefs and food artisans. The Berry Good Food cooking class experience brings students closer to the source of local and sustainable products, strengthens the community through shared experiences, and encourages participants to look for relationships instead of labels.
