Improve the lives of sick, injured, and orphaned native wildlife with the goal of releasing healthy animals back into the ecosystem, thus enabling future generations.
Why is it important?
Pelican Harbor Seabird Station stands as Miami’s premier wildlife hospital and education center, dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of native species while inspiring community engagement in conservation. Founded in 1980 by Harry & Darlene Kelton with a single aviary to care for injured brown pelicans, it has since grown into an internationally recognized nonprofit that treats thousands of sick, orphaned, and displaced animals each year, from warblers to tortoises. With over 43,000 patients representing more than 300 species served, the Station embodies compassion, integrity, and excellence in wildlife care while offering vital educational programming, research, and humane conflict resolution for the community. Supported solely by donations, Pelican Harbor Seabird Station continues to play a critical role in protecting South Florida’s biodiversity and fostering a culture of respect and stewardship for the natural world.
