Charity Mission

Ensure no New Yorkers go hungry by rescuing perfectly good, nutritious food that would otherwise go to waste and deliver it for free to New Yorkers experiencing hunger.

Why is it important?

City Harvest imagines New York City not just as a metropolis of hustle and bustle, but as a place where surplus food is reimagined as nourishment and connection. Since its founding in 1982, City Harvest has pioneered the food rescue movement in NYC, collecting perfectly good, nutritious food that would otherwise go to waste and delivering it free of charge to those experiencing hunger. Today, in a city where 1 in 4 children are food insecure, the organization rescues food from nearly 2,000 donors across the five boroughs including restaurants, grocery stores, farms, and manufacturers, and channels it into a network of over 400 community partners such as soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, and mobile markets across all five boroughs. City Harvest’s impact is mighty. To date, it has rescued and delivered more than one billion pounds of food.

In a given year, it aims to rescue over 100 million pounds of nutritious food, with fresh produce making up over 70 percent of that total since access to fruits and vegetables is especially constrained in many underserved neighborhoods. Beyond delivery, City Harvest strengthens resilience through programs in nutrition education, culinary workshops, and capacity building for partner agencies. In a city where millions struggle to afford rent, utilities, and food, City Harvest flushes life and dignity back into communities, reducing waste and ensuring people in need aren’t turning to unhealthy options. The organization also serves as a powerful model for local collaboration, leveraging volunteers, chefs, donors, and advocates to transform excess into sustenance.

How do they do it?

Simply put, City Harvest achieves its success through a compassionate approach that transforms food waste into opportunity and nourishment for millions of New Yorkers. At the heart of its mission is food rescue, whereby they collect surplus, high-quality food from restaurants, grocers, farms, and manufacturers that would otherwise be discarded, and deliver it free of charge to hundreds of community partners across the city. Their expansive food distribution network ensures that fresh produce, proteins, and pantry staples reach neighborhoods most impacted by food insecurity. Beyond distribution, City Harvest invests in long-term well-being through nutrition and culinary education programs that teach families how to prepare affordable, balanced meals and inspire healthier lifestyles. Their advocacy efforts champion policies that end hunger by addressing their root causes and confronting systemic inequities that disproportionately impact food insecure communities. The organization also stands on the frontlines of disaster response, mobilizing quickly in times of crisis, from pandemics to natural disasters, to ensure that no one goes hungry. By combining logistical expertise with deep community partnerships, City Harvest embodies New York’s resilience, feeding hope as much as it feeds people.

  • City Harvest offers a variety of volunteer opportunities in New York City, including participating in food rescue and distribution, providing nutrition education to people of all ages, supporting advocacy campaigns that fight hunger and build a more equitable and sustainable food system, and more. Find out how join the almost 12,000 annual volunteers here.
  • Just a few of these opportunities in detail are the Mobile Market - These farmers’ market style distributions deliver fresh produce free of charge 18 times a month across all five boroughs. You will distribute thousands of pounds of fruits and vegetables to hundreds of families. Repack and Grocery Repack - Much of the food that City Harvest procures through partnerships with farmers and wholesalers arrives in large capacity containers, which can be challenging to distribute equitably. Help us take thousands of pounds of produce and repack it from large, bulk containers into smaller, family-sized units that community food programs can easily distribute to their clients. Seasonal Greenmarket Rescue - Volunteers rescue thousands of pounds of fresh, seasonal produce that would otherwise go to waste at Greenmarkets across the city. At the close of the market, volunteers collect excess food from local farmers and help load it onto City Harvest trucks, which immediately deliver the food to soup kitchens and food pantries across the city.
  • The rest of these opportunities, including advocacy and office work can all be found here.
