Why is it important?

Florida’s beaches, estuaries, and world-famous waters all depend on one thing, a healthy Everglades. Captains For Clean Water is a grassroots nonprofit working to restore the natural flow of water through the Everglades, which reduces harmful discharges, prevents toxic algae blooms, and brings clean water back to Florida Bay and coastal estuaries. Since forming in 2016 to address the problems of Florida’s poor water management practices, Captains For Clean Water has seen progress for Florida’s waters and America’s Everglades achieved at a record pace. There’s a renewed focus and sense of unity among those involved in this fight for clean water. From advocacy organizations to state agencies to federal entities, the goal is clear: prioritize restoring and protecting Florida’s waters, the lifeblood of the state.

How do they do it?

Captains For Clean Water is building a movement of clean-water champions through dynamic Outreach, Education, and Advocacy programs that shine a light on the systemic issues degrading the state’s waterways. From harmful algal blooms and seagrass die-offs to red tide events and broader ecological collapse, Captains For Clean Water exposes the influence of special interest groups and demands accountability. Through powerful outreach initiatives, including speaking engagements, stakeholder dialogues, partnerships with scientists, and mobilization of the outdoor recreation industry, they provide the tools and knowledge needed to inspire meaningful action. Their education-driven programs inform and ignite a groundswell of grassroots support, helping to reshape the policies that govern Florida’s water future. These programs directly support their three main key areas of focus and encompass a variety of opportunities for supporters to make a difference in the fight for Florida’s water quality.

  • Everglades Restoration - Advancing improved water management and infrastructure that restore the Everglades, resolving water-quality issues throughout south Florida.
  • Nutrient Pollution - Creating awareness around excess nutrient sources and their detrimental impact to our coastal estuaries, such as fueling red tide, blue green algae, and other harmful algal blooms
  • Water Policy - Activating their supporters to influence water policy and management outcomes through awareness campaigns and action opportunities.
