Help vulnerable women and children in Nepal build pathways out of poverty through holistic, community-based programs that promote education, mental health, and physical wellbeing.  

 

Why is it important?

Nepali women and children experiencing generational poverty often face daily challenges such as limited access to quality education, healthcare, and nutritious food, which restricts their opportunities and long-term well-being. They may also encounter gender discrimination, unsafe working conditions, and heightened vulnerability to child labor or early marriage, making it difficult to break the cycle of poverty. Sunsar Maya was born out of a desire to help them break this ongoing cycle of generational poverty. Established in 2011, Sunsar Maya was founded by four individuals who met and became friends while volunteering in Nepal. They were deeply moved by the kindness and generosity of the Nepali people, particularly the children they met. After witnessing the difficulties so many Nepalis face on a daily basis, they resolved to make a positive difference in their lives. By empowering participants with life skills, academic support, and economic opportunities, the organization strengthens communities and fosters sustainable change from the ground up.

How do they do it?

Sunsar Maya helps women and children in Nepal break the cycle of generational poverty by creating safe learning environments and providing the education, resources, and emotional support needed to thrive. Through its After School Program (ASP), children receive academic tutoring, counseling, and nutritious meals to help them stay in school and succeed. The Women’s Literacy Program (WLP) equips women with reading, writing, and life-skills training that builds confidence and economic independence. Their Teacher Training pillar strengthens local schools by preparing educators in child-centered learning and trauma-informed care, improving education quality across communities. Finally, Emergency Relief ensures families facing crises have access to food, supplies, and financial assistance, allowing them to remain stable and continue participating in programs that support long-term, sustainable change.

  • Sunsar Maya accepts volunteers on a case by case basis, and those that do eventually join do not work directly with their students.
