Protect the Mojave Desert ecosystem and its scenic and cultural resource values. Their vision of the Mojave Desert includes dark night skies, clean air and water, broad views and vistas, and an abundance of native plants and animals.

Why is it important?

The Mojave Desert Land Trust is a guardian of one of America’s most awe-inspiring and fragile landscapes, working tirelessly to preserve the wild beauty and biodiversity of the California desert. By protecting thousands of acres of critical habitat, restoring native plants, and creating wildlife corridors, the trust ensures that iconic species such as the desert tortoise, bighorn sheep, and countless pollinators can thrive. Their efforts extend beyond conservation to include community education and volunteer stewardship, inspiring travelers and locals alike to become caretakers of this vast, living ecosystem.

How do they do it?

The Mojave Desert Land Trust achieves its mission through an approach to conservation that protects land, restores habitat, and engages communities as stewards of this iconic landscape. By acquiring and safeguarding more than 100,000 acres of desert wildlands, MDLT ensures that the Mojave’s scenic vistas, cultural treasures, and fragile ecosystems remain intact for future generations. Their Native Plant Restoration Nursery grows tens of thousands of plants annually to heal disturbed lands, while their Desert Discovery Field Studies and volunteer programs connect people directly with the desert’s ecology and history. Through initiatives that promote dark night skies, clean air and water, and the preservation of broad vistas and wildlife corridors, MDLT safeguards not only habitat for native species, but also the cultural and spiritual values held by local tribes and communities. By weaving together conservation science, land stewardship, and public education, the Mojave Desert Land Trust is ensuring that the desert remains a sanctuary of native plants, animals, and wide-open wonder, inspiring all who experience it to protect its timeless beauty.
