Contribute to the conservation of natural resources and environment of the Los Cabos municipality and surrounding communities by strengthening an environmental culture through direct experiences with sea turtles and nature.

Why is it important?

ASUPMATOMA is a non-profit organization formed in 1995 as a marine turtle center. Their efforts focus principally on protection, conservation, and investigating of marine turtles with an emphasis in community outreach. ASUPMATOMA protects one of Baja California Sur’s most fragile coastal ecosystems by safeguarding endangered sea turtles at every stage of life. ASUPMATOMA turns conservation into a shared responsibility by engaging locals and visitors alike to ensure that sea turtle protection in Los Cabos is not only effective today but sustainable for generations to come. Their vision is to be the leading professional organization  that promotes and increases the active participation and technical training for the local and foreign communities to solve social-environmental problems within the Los Cabos municipality.

How do they do it?

Very much a grassroots organization, ASUPMATOMA has been protecting sea turtles and their habitat since 1995. Their core work revolves around patrolling key nesting beaches throughout the nesting season (typically June–December), monitoring and safeguarding nests from poachers, natural predators, and human disturbances, and relocating at-risk clutches into protected hatchery areas where they can incubate safely. By combining hands-on conservation with community education, ASUPMATOMA has helped grow the number of nests in the region from just a few dozen in the 1990s to around a thousand annually today. Their programs include biological monitoring and nightly beach patrols, nest relocation to secure corrals and hatcheries, and community outreach and education, including school programs and public talks to raise awareness about marine conservation. They also run engaging participatory initiatives such as “Adopt a Sea Turtle” nest programs, volunteer patrols, and hatchling release events that invite locals and visitors alike to help guide newly hatched turtles safely to the ocean, reinforcing both conservation outcomes and environmental stewardship.
