6 US Airports With Yoga Rooms

Taking time before, after, or between flights for a few poses and moments of meditation can definitely make the experience of travel less stressful and more enjoyable.

When America’s first airport yoga room opened in 2012 at San Francisco International Airport (SFO), Airport Director John L. Martin, a longtime yoga practitioner, told KNTV's Bob Redell that the idea came from a passenger's suggestion. As Martin continued, "When we began to remodel Terminal 2, one of our goals was not just to bring the glamour back to air travel, but to also make the entire experience less stressful and more enjoyable.” Personally, after visiting SFO’s yoga room for the first time, I felt like someone had looked at my travel wishlist. Needless to say, I was thrilled, and have increasingly been excited as more airport yoga rooms have opened across the U.S.

Below, find a few of the best airport yoga rooms around America. Bonus points: All these airport yoga rooms are free to use.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO)

SFO is the OG of airport yoga rooms, which shouldn’t come as a surprise with its location in the wellness- and innovation-centric San Francisco Bay Area. As mentioned above, the first one opened in 2012 in Terminal 2 during the section’s remodel, while an additional yoga space has been added in Terminal 3. Simply look for the meditation icon signs throughout the airport.

In Terminal 2, the yoga room is just after the TSA security checkpoint, inside the corridor between Terminals 1 and 2. In Terminal 3, the yoga room is located near gate 69. Designed by Gensler, a global design and architecture firm, the calming blue walls, dim light, wood floors, and mirrors create a calming sanctuary. Both SFO yoga rooms are open 24 hours a day and have yoga mats available.

Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (ORD)

ORD’s soothing earth tone-walled and bamboo-floored private yoga space with living plants outside the frosted windows creates an oasis in this busy airport. Located on the Mezzanine Level of the Terminal 3 Rotunda, near the airport’s Urban Garden, O’Hare’s airport yoga room brings a sense of calm and serenity to a place that’s otherwise known for hustle and bustle. Inside, a video monitor displays yoga and nature imagery, accompanied by soothing sounds to promote relaxation. A second video monitor outside the room offers flight departure information so you can make your flight. Practice daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Chicago Midway Airport (MDW)

Travelers flying through Chicago can also find a yoga room at Chicago’s other airport, Midway. If you’re traveling through Concourse C at Midway Airport, the well-marked yoga room is next to the Mother’s Room. The frosted glass windows provide privacy so you can practice in peace on the sustainable bamboo floor. Mats (and disinfecting mat wipes) are available in the space that is open every day between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.

Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW)

DFW, one of the largest airports in the Midwest, and one of the world’s busiest hubs, has a strong commitment to wellness, featuring two airport yoga studios. One is in Terminal B (find it at D40/B1) and the other in Terminal E (near gate E31). Terminal B’s yoga studio is also located on an end of the one-mile, mosaic-marked LiveWell Walking Path. Open 24 hours a day, the DFW yoga rooms have complimentary mats, exercise balls, and even stretch bands. If you like to practice with prompts, 20-minute videos with different levels of practice are available, too.

Burlington International Airport (BTV)

Located on the shores of Lake Champlain in Northern Vermont, near Adirondack Park, Burlington International Airport features a yoga and meditation practice space that was designed by Evolution Yoga in 2013. Look for it on the second floor on the west side of the airport. Yoga mats, cushions and blocks are available for travelers to use free of charge. If you need a place to change, there is a family bathroom, with a shower across from the Observation Tower.

Miami International Airport (MIA)

Arrive early to Miami International Airport, or practice before you head out to the beaches, since MIA’s airport yoga room is located pre-security on the ground level of Concourse H. Open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., the tranquil space has yoga mats available for travelers who don’t travel with their own. Before or after your downward-facing dog pose, look for one of the airport’s therapy dogs for additional stress relief.
