ABOUT

The Setting

The colorful Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan is rich in culture, tradition, and spirituality that has been carefully guarded and preserved, and lives by its ethos of gross national happiness. This makes for a perfect marriage with Six Senses, a Kind Hotel brand passionately committed to sustainability with a deep obligation to care for the environment, natural resources and communities, plus preserving and protecting the world’s only carbon-negative country. Sustainability is the foundation for everything here, reflected through Six Senses’ management of energy, water, waste, protection of local wildlife, purchasing and chemical usage and engagement with local communities. Throughout the kingdom’s western and central valleys are the five unique lodges; collectively known as Six Senses Bhutan. Each offers its own character, environment and experiences, yet together they can be crafted into one enchanting journey through the beauty, spirituality and culture of the Happiest Place on Earth.

Kind Travelers can visit one or any combination, and immerse themselves in Bhutan’s spirituality and heritage while embracing Six Senses guiding principles, including a Six Senses Spa and Wellness Center, mindful eating, sleep and self-discovery. Bike or trek rich mountain landscapes and rice fields, meditate and pray with local Buddhist monks, or visit nearby villages for authentic Bhutanese hospitality. When entering each lodge for the first time, your GEM (guest experience maker) will present you with a ‘khadar,’ a traditional scarf printed with sacred symbols, to mark your arrival. The khadar varies in color from lodge to lodge and each carries an important meaning, linked to the chant of a Buddhist mantra to promote positivity and protection for your journey. Be sure to bottle all this Kindness and happiness for the journey home, too.

Conscious Culture
Mindful Adventures
  • In Thimphu, have astrology readings with a monk from Pangri Zampa Monastery
  • In Gangtey, enjoy a candlelit dinner at the cowshed at Damchen Lhakhang with dinner cooked on a traditional clay stove
  • In Bumthang, guests have special access to the shrine room at Wangdicholing Palace for a butter lamp offering
  • Included in your stay: Hike for an hour and a half with your guide to the beautiful mountantop of Talakha Monastery. Light a traditional butter lamp offering, which dispels darkness and ignorance, and tie prayer flags to carry your prayer out into the universe.
Do Good for the Day
Be Kind to Yourself
  • In Thimphu, treat yourself to a morning stroll on the Buddha Dordenma Hiking Trails
  • At the Gangtey Lodge, indulge in the Reconnect With Nature experience where you’ll mountain bike to nearby Nimpgay Village to visit a family farm, you’ll enjoy traditional buckwheat pancakes and top off the day with a fire purification ceremony called Riwo Sangcho. This ritual combines the offerings of sang (smoke), sur (smell) and jinsek (flame). The combination of smoke, smell and flame purifies the mind, body and spirit and helps to dispel any negative energies.
  • Reconnect With Others in Punakha, hike across the valley’s lush rice fields past traditional farmhouses and join local children on their way to school. Enjoy a vegetarian breakfast at the monastery with young monks, then complete your morning back at the lodge with a mandala offering ceremony.
