Representing 42 branches within British Columbia, the BC SPCA is a loud voice speaking for animals.

The MISSION of the BC SPCA is to protect and enhance the quality of life for domestic, farm and wildlife animals in B.C.

Why is it important?

It’s hard to believe that animal cruelty exists, but it does. That’s why BC SPCA is a vital of part of providing welfare to the thousands of abused, injured, lost, homeless and neglected animals found and rescued each year in B.C. The organization was founded on the belief that animals are entitled to kind and respectful treatment at the hands of humans and must be protected under the law.

How do they do it?

The protection of animals against physical and psychological abuse is at the heart of the BC SPCA’s mission. Through the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, the BC SPCA’s special constables have the power to investigate 10,000+ annual complaints of cruelty in the Province, issue orders to owners to make changes to ensure safety, execute warrants to remove animals from harmful situations, and recommend charges if needed.

The BC SPCA is proactive in adoption and sheltering, finding nearly 16,000 new homes for abandoned or surrendered animals. Other programs to ensure animal welfare include: emergency rescue and treatment, actively lobbying for stronger anti-cruelty laws, wildlife rehabilitation, farm animal protection including a labeling program that identifies food products that ensure high animal welfare raising standards, youth programs aimed at empowering children to treat animals with compassion and respect, spay/neuter programs to help control pet populations, public service campaigns to educate humane practices, a Lost & Found website re-uniting owners with lost pets, veterinary services, temperament assessments and compatibility matching for prospective guardians as well as an animal welfare program at the University of British Columbia.
