Escape to a converted 19th Century manor in Portugal’s historic and breathtaking Douro River Valley.

The Setting

The world is finally catching on to what the Portuguese have known forever, that the Douro Valley is one of the most glorious places on Earth. The peaceful River Douro winds through steep terrace vineyards and postcard-worthy rolling hills sprinkled with whitewashed 18th Century quintas (estates). With wine production (Port) going back as far as 2000 years, it’s regarded as one of the world’s oldest demarcated wine regions, (since 1756), leading to its recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A particular Quinta we’d like to introduce you to, is Six Senses Douro Valley. This historic manor was converted into a five-star hotel in 2007 and is as thoughtful as it is stunning.

Six Senses Douro Valley has protected a 10-acre (4-hectare) woodland on the property, highlighting its commitment to sustaining the environment and beautiful old-growth trees. They also sponsor the APEGA Donkey Refuge close to the Spanish border, where the last remaining Miranda donkeys are being saved from extinction. As Kind Travelers, you strive to leave places better than you found them, at Six Senses you may just leave as a better version of yourself, too. They are always promoting positive well-being by incorporating the six dimensions of wellness: social, environmental, physical, spiritual, emotional, and intellectual.

Sleep and Sanctuary

Contemporary design and technological comforts meet the past in Six Senses Douro Valley’s 60 guest accommodations, ranging from Quinta Superior, Quinta Deluxe and Quinta River rooms, to spacious suites. Most guest rooms and suites pander to your sense of sight with vineyard or river views from private terraces or panoramic windows. Then, pander to your sense of touch with plush comforts, such as a range of hypoallergenic pillows from their pillow menu. In addition, all are sensitively refurbished to blend traditional highlights with Six Senses natural style. Take particular note of that style which led Virtuoso magazine to recognize them as the resort with the Best Achievement in Design.

Eat. Pray. Eat.

Dining at Six Senses Douro Valley is a celebration of the region, you’ll find most of the produce is grown in the verdant valley that surrounds the resort. It’s also helpful an organic garden of vegetables and herbs is located right on the estate. These fresh ingredients are harvested only as needed, assuring ultimate freshness and flavor. Your main dining destination is the much lauded The Vale de Abraão Restaurant, offering a fine tasting menu in their classically elegant The Dining Room, or an all-day eatery featuring regional dishes and seasonal menus in the Open Kitchen and Terrace. For some laid back tapas or drinks with friends in a livelier environment, the Quinta Bar & Lounge is your best bet. Keeping up with the Earthly and sustainable ethos, the Summer Garden Restaurants bring the feast outdoors in stunning fashion with two pop-ups, a garden barbeque and Pickles Restaurant. There’s also the Wine Library & Terrace, perfect for pre/post-dinner sips and tapas. Unique to Six Senses Douro Valley, guests can learn the benefits of cooking responsibly with a cooking class, learn how to sustainably harvest vegetables for your home garden, or even learn to reap the health benefits by pickling produce and making your own fermented shrubs and tonics.

The Art of De-stressing
  • Portuguese tradition meets the elements of water, stone, and wood in a great setting for rural relaxation at  Six Senses Spa. The spa uses only natural and ethically-produced products (including those from the organic herb and plant garden) together with traditional and locally-inspired practices to treat you from the inside out and outside in. Aprés massage, plunge into more bliss in the external pool. There’s also a large outdoor yoga deck that blends beautifully with nature and its surroundings available for meditation or guided yoga practice.

  • Adding to the bevy of wellness-inspired touches at Six Senses, find a large well-equipped 24-hour gym presenting the feel of a private living room rather than an exercise area. Also worthy of a visit is the Alchemy Bar, where potions of herbs, salt, grapes, and a range of exotic ingredients are individually blended for scrubs and masks. Take a 30-minute hands-on workshop to learn how to make your own cosmetics using fresh, seasonal and 100 percent organic ingredients from the garden.

  • For those feeling nomadic, borrow a mountain bike from the Activities Hut to explore the property or ride over to local wine estates and towns. On foot? Hiking trails are around the property, a few trails even pass by your doorstep. Also down by the Activities Hut, a newly built paddle tennis court, badminton court, table tennis, and pétanque game are available and free to all guests. Nearby, the passive Douro River is ideal for kayaking, paddleboard excursions and other water sports.
