Experience the quintessence of San Diego coastal luxury at La Jolla’s historic La Valencia Hotel.

The Setting

Since 1926, La Valencia Hotel has been perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean in swank La Jolla, the crown jewel of San Diego. Also affectionately known as “the Pink Lady,” this historical gem shines with old world grandeur and old Hollywood glamour, having welcomed luminaries and travelers from all over the globe. Undergoing a massive updating in 2014, she still has managed to keep all of her old Mediterranean charms while offering modern amenities. Picture majestic Spanish architecture with a windswept central tower over mature lush grounds that cascade down to the sea, a myriad of colorful tiles, rich wood accents and beams, a lobby with Persian rugs arranged on orange-tiled floors, original local artwork adorning walls, Queen Anne style chaises and a Spanish-inspired saltwater pool overlooking the ocean. This captivating property is just steps to picturesque La Jolla Cove, as well as downtown La Jolla’s charming shops, restaurants and galleries. Tack on a coastal chic restaurant, a sassy European-style bistro and a lively bar with sweeping views. We have to say, this old lady has definitely still got it.

Sleep and Sanctuary

La Valencia’s 114 guestrooms and suites are certainly not lacking for taste. Whisk yourself away to an era timeless luxury while not sacrificing any modern convenience. Most guestrooms have ocean views while the alternatives include garden and La Jolla village views (not too shabby). Expect to find modern touches like comfy beds with 300 count imported linens, luxury bath amenities, HDTV’s, complimentary WiFi and Kuerig coffee makers. Remarking on the historical layout, rooms can be categorized by four types: Classic, Vintage, Villas and the three over the top Icon Suites. Here are some highlights of each: Classic rooms are residentially inspired and have king beds with oversized tub/shower combos, Vintage rooms are more intimate and feature European style showers with dual heads, luxurious Villas are spacious and airy and feature extravagance like separate tubs, balconies, patios and fireplaces, lastly, Icon suites are brand new and more penthouse style with smashing ocean views. Keeping up with the times, the hotel is pet-friendly, too, just expect to pay a $30 pet fee.

Eat. Pray. Eat.

As La Valencia evolves into its 9th decade and beyond, the property’s three distinct eating and drinking outposts are sure to help spearhead that evolution. Bringing on executive chef Alex Emery, a San Diego native known for his passion for utilizing local and sustainable products, was a step in the kind direction. Dine on coastal chic cuisine with picturesque ocean views on the alfresco (and pet-friendly) patio garden of The MED. Experience modern European fare and classic libations in the vintage chic bistro, Cafe La Rue. Much like its inspired old world ancestry, the perfect place for a relaxing outdoor village vibe. Those looking to kick up their heels overlooking the Pacific will be well fulfilled at La Sala Lounge, a classic Spanish mosaic laden living room that’s probably seen more than its share of ribaldry through the years. Also, we’ll twist your arm and suggest you enjoy food and drinks while you relax by the pool. Those in the mood from some in-room privacy or breakfast in bed can indulge in 24 hour room service, no slacking here on menu options, find the highlights from all La Valencia’s signature restaurants.

THE MED - Well traveled tastes will be satisfied in this Mediterranean Villa inspired setting. Also find a 7th floor terrace for fab ocean and pool views to savor New American dishes with an evening emphasis towards the sea’s bounty along with healthy garden dishes like roasted cauliflower with pine nuts, shaved celery, sultana raisins and agrodolce and seasonally sourced salads. Not to mention daily breakfast and weekend brunches that brunch experts would approve of.

Cafe La Rue - It’s said all streets in La Jolla lead to here. This outdoor European style Cafe is perfect for people watching while sipping on a handcrafted cocktail amid terrazzo floors, Venetian plaster ceilings, glass enclosed wine vaults and a large bar graced by paintings of Parisian life in 1947, the year of the cafe’s inception. Find delightful bites like farmers' market fruit bowls and a selection of flatbreads, hearty salads and wraps, like the roasted eggplant wrap with squash, portobello, muhammara, almonds and sunflower sprouts. While you’re at it, treat yourself to a Pink Lady (Tito’s Vodka, Basil, watermelon, lime) and a little laissez-faire.

LA Sala Lounge - Be sure to end your day at the place to be seen in La Jolla, this stunning living room bar of  the La Valencia. Located just off the lobby, drink amongst locals in the know, Spanish mosaics on cozy couches and chairs. As you delight in snappy appetizers and live music (5 days a week), be sure to gaze out the window at the moonlit Pacific and imagine Humphrey Bogart walking into the room in a white tuxedo jacket to give old Sam a request or two on the baby grand.

The Art of De-stressing

While La Valencia lacks a formal spa per se, you can still find tranquility and renewal in the comfort of your room with one of their signature in-room massages. Open your windows and take in the flowery ocean breeze while you indulge in a fusion experience blending a relaxing choice of bodywork, including Swedish techniques, with deep tissue/neuromuscular therapy, Acupressure or Shiatsu. Massages can also be had next to the pool with arrangement.

Work off that brunch with an empowering workout in La Valencia’s fitness center, sweating it out on an array of state-of-the-art treadmills and free weights. Afterwards, don’t forget to cool off with a few laps in the heated swimming pool. Those who de-stress through retail therapy will be tickled pink to venture to La Jolla Village’s world renowned and dazzling storefronts, ranging from exclusive designers to charming boutiques.
