Upscale boutique luxury meets sustainability in Chicago’s trendy River North neighborhood, meet Hotel Felix

The Setting

If you’re headed to the windy city and looking to set up camp at a four-star Eco-Friendly boutique hotel that seamlessly merges upscale amenities, comfortable elegance, energy efficiency with sustainable and recycled materials throughout, then look no further than the Hotel Felix. Some hotels boast of sustainability, but the Felix delivers the greenness in spades. In fact, they’re the first hotel in Chicago to earn a silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. Find the Felix (meaning “happy” in Latin) smack dab in the poppin’ River North neighborhood of Chicago, a former warehouse district once populated by artists and writers, now known for art galleries, boutiques, the largest concentration of restaurants outside Manhattan, the Magnificent Mile upscale shopping district and historical landmarks. Upon arrival, greet “Loren the Doorman,” a 7-foot statue built entirely out of reclaimed materials (just don’t expect him to help you with your bags). It’s that touch of whimsy you’ll also find as you enter a lobby with ceiling-high mosaics of logs, bright sunlight from towering windows alongside a water pond and delicate orbs floating over a fireplace symbolizing “Earth, Wind & Fire,” the theme that embodies the hotel’s commitment to the environment. No doubt why the hotel’s mantra is Happy. Naturally.

Sleep and Sanctuary

When reducing a property’s carbon footprint, sometimes amenities are the first to be sacrificed, not in this case, however. Sure, some energy sucking mod cons like microwaves and fridges fell by the wayside, but each of the Felix’s 225 beautifully crafted guestrooms make well due. Find luxurious bedding and linens, tech savvy amenities ( including free WiFi), sleek office decor, recycled carpets, flat screen TV’s and individual climate control. Awesome side note: the hotel runs on an energy management system that relies on motion sensors to regulate heating and cooling. Pamper yourself in modern bathrooms and walk-in showers with rainfall showerheads and eco-friendly L’Occitane toiletries. Lastly, pamper your eyes and your soul with panoramic views of the Chicago skyline, which last time we checked, are pretty darn spectacular.

Eat. Pray. Eat.

Kind Travelers and Kind eaters will delight in the Felix’s own chic neighborhood-style French bistro, Troquet River North. This breakfast, lunch & dinner joint focuses on the rich traditions of  friendship and hospitality while serving up the freshest and finest local ingredients along with a sexy bar, to boot. Start off at Troquet Bar with a “Fresh Felix” made with organic gin and savor veggie-friendly bites like a Vegetable Pasta with wild mushrooms, roasted winter squash, truffle and parmesan (hold for vegan, obviously), or substitute any patty on their divine burger menu for a house-made French lentil and mushroom patty on a multi-grain bun. For those looking to kick off the day with a bang or finish that “think piece” in the Chicago Tribune, Troquet transforms into Big Shoulders Cafe from 7AM - 3PM serving free-trade coffee. Re-fuel in the lobby on comfy sofas amongst natural woods.

The Art of De-stressing

When it’s time to unwind, the Felix Spa treats wellness as an artform, and good news, your body is the canvas. Their highly skilled team has the goods to rejuvenate the senses and awaken your spirit while using only eco-friendly products created with the purest plant and flower extracts. We recommend a Warm Honey Drizzle Delight, not only because it sounds like a delicious cocktail, but because this truly unique treatment incorporates organic, raw honey to cleanse pores, improve circulation and smooth muscles and joints. Add ons, like a Body Melt Stone Therapy can be had for only $30 more. Reserve a treatment in one of the spas comfortable rooms with bamboo flooring and recycled wall materials or the privacy of your own guestroom.

Kind Travelers hoping to keep up the workout regimen will be thrilled with the Felix’s 24 hour GYM. Pop in those ear buds and work it out on state-of-the-art equipment, like 3 treadmills, ellipticals, and free weights. We’d be remiss not to mention the gym only uses recycled cups and wipes and features recycled flooring throughout. Thumbs up!
