Escape to Francis Ford Coppola’s eco-luxury hideaway set against tumbling waterfalls, turquoise pools and a dramatic jungle.

Covid-19 Safety Commitment

The Setting

Several years ago Francis Ford Coppola opened up his family retreat in the Mountain Pine Forest Reserve in western Belize to the public. For Kind Travelers that means an escape to an eco-luxury hideaway set against tumbling waterfalls, turquoise pools and dramatic jungle that is not only Rainforest Alliance Verified, but contributes monthly to local charities. This is the ideal place to explore the ancient civilization of the Maya on foot or horseback, stroll through the organic garden and retreat to your thatch-roofed cabana’s patio for a quiet glass of wine (Coppola, naturally). Can boutique lodges win Oscars?

Sleep and Sanctuary

The 20 cabanas and villas offered at Blancaneaux Lodge, including Coppola’s magnificent personal villa, seamlessly blend into their natural surroundings with unabashed rustic luxury. You’ll find some with private plunge pools, grandiose patios and all with environmentally sound designs featuring thatch roofs, regional woods and local tiles. Not many high-tech amenities will be found in your dwelling, not even A/C since the cabanas are ecologically designed not to need it, which is fine, since you’ll want to feel as much a part of the lush jungle landscape as possible.

Eat. Pray. Eat.

At Blancaneaux Lodge guests will have the option of tantalizing their taste buds with either Montagna Ristorante’s traditional Italian drawn from the Coppola family history or poolside Guatemalan cuisine at Guatemaltecqua Restaurant. Naturally, both places are long on tropical vibes and showcase flavorful organic produce grown on the property (not to mention wines from the family collection). The Jaguar bar’s handcrafted furnishings and relics from Apocalypse Now make it the perfect place for a pre/post dinner craft cocktail. Kind eaters looking for an enlightening dining experience are welcome to join the convivial twice-weekly dinners thrown in the Garden Spot where you can learn about the organic farming practices and get a glimpse of the unique produce of the verdant environment (and yes, there is wine).

Montagna Ristorante - The menu at this candlelit room awash with colonial era antiques and Guatemalan fabrics features traditional Italian dishes with a special focus on Coppola family recipes, drawn from their history in the southern region of Basilicata, Italy. Pastas, fresh fish, and braised or grilled local meats are all prepared with herbs and vegetables from the organic garden. Also delight in made-to-order pizza, cooked in an authentic brick oven. Sit on the open veranda for views of the creek.

Guatemaltecqua Restaurant - This poolside tropical eatery specializes in the cooking of Guatemala, a mildly spiced cuisine that draws on Mexican, Caribbean, and Maya traditions. Local favorites include Salpicon, shredded beef salad flavored with sour orange and cilantro, Jocon, chicken cooked with green herbs and spices, and Rellenitos, a delicious dessert consisting of plantains filled with sweetened black beans.

The Jaguar Bar - This handsome boite evokes an archaeological spirit for in an eclectic environment. Find fitting libations like fine wines and classic cocktails including favorites such as mojitos and daiquiris, as well as the house “Jaguar Juice,” a potent concoction of local craboo liqueur, aged rum, and fresh pineapple juice.

The Garden Spot - After a tour of the gardens, learning about the sustainable practices that go into maintaining a garden in the jungle (and a cocktail), you’ll join other guests at a communal table located on the open-air porch of the new thatched roof kitchen within the organic garden. You’ll dine on a three-course meal all inspired by ingredients picked fresh that day from salads to soups to pastas and stir fry dishes. All courses are vegetarian and we promise you won’t miss having meat. All paired with the perfect wine, of course.

The Art of De-stressing

Set on the steps of Privassion Creek, the Waterfall Spa specializes in the art of Thai massage (at the direction of Mr. Coppola himself). Relax in Kind bliss in hot pools heated by hydroelectricity overlooking cascading waterfalls, or indulge in spa treatments using locally sourced organic ingredients. Be sure to try an exfoliating papaya body polish as you drink in natural light in the open air space. We’re talking eco- luxury at its finest here, folks.

De-stressing is the name of the game in this jungle paradise, but should you desire more, a relaxing horseback tour through the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve on one of the lodge’s beautiful equines ought to do the trick. Or, head for a relaxing swim/lounge combo in the lodge’s freshwater pool or in the abundance of natural swimming holes with smooth granite boulders and sandy beaches found throughout
the forest reserve.
