Sea-salt breeze, Miami sun, and Kindness all around… No, we’re not talking about heaven: Meet the Betsy Hotel.
This newly-renovated beauty sits on Ocean Drive in the Art Deco district, with the Atlantic and Miami’s many to-do’s merely steps away. Constituting the only Four Star boutique hotel in Florida, the hotel’s original property was already a first-rate experience. Now that it’s doubled in size, having joined forces with the property next door, Betsy’s final product sets a seriously high standard for competitors to reach. It’s laid-back vibe echos South Beach as a whole: a winning blend of Colonial luxury, Art Deco inspiration, classy historicism, and beachtown bliss. But as we know, outer beauty means little without its inner counterpart–and the Betsy Hotel does not disappoint. Its palpable heart of Kindness is impossible to ignore, with the brand’s mission residing in its PACE Program: an acronym signifying its dedication to, and support for, Philanthropy, the Arts, Culture, and Education. This not only entails a host of programming at the hotel, but also engagement with the nonprofit sector and local community, as well as public art installations. Add six on-site eateries, a Wellness Garden and Spa, pools (both ground-level and rooftop), plus creative social spaces (like a Writer’s Room and Library), this place feels almost too good to be true. Maybe we were talking about heaven, after all?
Sleep and Sanctuary
Betsy’s 130 guestrooms, including 25 suites, are spread across its two wings: the original Colonial and new Art Deco. Their understated elegance leaves you pampered while right at home, tucking you away in an ideal beachside haven. Enjoy natural wood accents, dark walnut floors, high-speed WiFi, MALIN+GOETZ bath products (made from botanical extracts), and curated guest libraries, if you forgot your own beach read at home. As the hotel’s wings were crafted by two different designers, expect distinctly different, though equally appealing, feels in each: classic Floridian in the original Betsy (think plantation-esque white shutters), and breezier beach vibes in the Art Deco wing. This also entails some differing amenities. The bathrooms, for example, are made of marble in the Colonial wing, versus walk-in glass showers and bathroom mirrors inlaid with LCD TV’s (yes, we did a double take here too) in the Art Deco. The latter rooms also include their own private bar offerings, so have fun working on your mixology skills before drinking up, Miami style.
Eat. Pray. Eat.
Exec Chef Laurent Tourondel leads Betsy’s culinary dream team, spanning six bars and restaurant throughout the hotel. His famed craft is based in the following purist philosophy that’s awarded him numerous accolades over the course of his career. Food preparation should be simple; service, efficient and Kind; and ingredients as fresh, high-quality, and locally-sourced as they can possibly come. Considering its ethos, the Betsy has a Chef’s herbal garden on-site, you can dine assured that Tourondel is both true to his word, and lives up to his hype. Bon appétit.
LT Steak and Seafood – Open for all meals, including weekend brunch, this refined and relaxed restaurant features American classics with a South Beach twist. Don’t let it’s name fool you; plant-based options are also offered on each seasonally-inspired menu, in addition to literary-inspired cocktails, in accordance with the Betsy’s artsy heart. Start your day with a healthy juice blend (like the Watermelon Kiss, with pineapple, lemon, and mint), then head on back to grub at lunch, with options like a crispy mushroom bao bun drizzled with truffle aioli, and the Lots of Grains Bowl filled with seeds, kale, avocado, grapefruit, jicama, and tamarind-guava vinaigrette. For dinner, try out a combo of market veggie sides, followed up by a dessert treat sampler to treat yo’self afterwards that included coconut rocher, macaron, blondie brownie, chocolate truffle, and mini trio of cookies. Need we say more?
Ocean Deck – What are roofs for if not to lounge amidst killer views? Betsy’s Ocean Deck serves light fare and tropical smoothies, as well as a full service bar (a given in South Beach, we think). Enjoy while sprawled atop chaise loungers in either sun or retractable shade, facing an unobstructed, Atlantic Ocean view. Yes, please.
- Lobby Salon – Notable for its live jazz gigs held Wednesday and Thursday evenings, this swanky, lobby hide-away should definitely be on your Betsy to-do list. Does your trip really mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing? Sip specialty cocktails crafted with local flavors and fresh ingredients, and delivered with the stellar service that’s consistent throughout Betsy’s property.
Art Deco Wing
Poeti – [Coming soon; menu to follow] This trattoria-style Italian haunt is brand new to the property, and your taste-buds will thank you for the addition. Featuring classic dishes updated with modern renditions, savor homemade pastas, brick-oven pizzas, and antipasti starters to accompany the mains.
14th Place Terrace – Perched a level atop Poeti, this tiered outdoor terrace is home to the Chef’s herbal garden, as well as some mini restaurant extensions of Poeti itself. Find a grab-and-go counter offering salads, wraps, snacks, and pressed juices, and in the mornings, baked goods, fresh fruit, and breakfast sandwiches as well. The deliciousness continues into a separate dessert counter, called, Poeti Gelato & Crêpes. Here, cultures collide into a decadent treat of French sweet crépes and gooey Italian gelato. Yes, it’s cool to drool; you know we are too.
- The Conservatory – In the old, historic lobby of the Art Deco wing lies this communal lounging space, complete with an espresso and wine bar. Light fare and mixed drinks are available as well, inviting guests to break bread and share a drink with friends, new and/or old.
Prefer to dine in peace and privacy? Enjoy in-room dining from the LT Steak and Seafood menu anytime between 7am and 10pm.
The Art of De-stressing
The aforementioned Ocean Deck is home to a host of de-stressing activities. Rise with the dawn for sunrise yoga (held Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays) then treat yourself to a Zen day at the Wellness Garden and Spa. In line with it being Miami’s only outdoor spa, this one-of-a-kind retreat also brings guests to nature by using paraben-free, all-natural products from Éminence Organic Skin Care. Signature treatments, among massages, body treatments, and mani-pedis, nclude a Wood Stone Ritual using chilled stones, and a Coconut Hot Towel Facial. Plus the spa menu presents poems with each treatment, because poems. The hotel also houses its own 24-hour fitness center, offering internet-connected bikes, machines with TV’s and complimentary headphones, in addition to fresh apples, of course. Personal trainers are also available upon request.
If anything speaks to the soul of this property, it has to be the Writer’s Room, housed in the Colonial wing. This space of respite invites writers to get in their zones, a peaceful retreat recalling the “writing rooms” common to hotels of the pre-war era (in turn, falling in line with Betsy’s historical element as a whole). B Bar is another space meant for literary geniuses: a vintage-vibe speakeasy (also in the Colonial wing) that hosts poetry readings, and can be booked for special events, too. The Art Deco wing offers further de-stressing options, including a 24-hour library and an enormous outdoor courtyard, called the Atrium. This wing also hosts a rooftop pool with spacious deck, which only enhances the ante of the Colonial wing pool, held ground level. Lastly, but far from least, don’t forget your salt-water swim option. Turquoise waves and white sands await you at the beachfront Betsy, in addition to its famous service, which extends to the beach as well.

Golf Course Nearby
The Colonial wing is home to three types of standard guestrooms: Classics, with single king or two double beds; Superiors, with king beds and views of the courtyard pool; and larger Deluxes, with single king or two double beds, as well as views of Lummus Park and the Atlantic Ocean (bring on Mother Nature!). On the Art Deco side, find even more standard options. Classic and Atrium rooms feature single king beds (which can be upgraded to balcony version, if preferred), with the Atrium versions overlooking the Atrium courtyard. The snazziest options, Skyline Level Bungalows, feature terraces as well. This Skyline Level constitutes the Art Deco’s top floor, feauturing open-air corridors and easy access to the rooftop pool. Dive in!
Suites are similarly spread out across the two wings, with names reflecting their aforementioned, standard counterparts. Each features a separate living and entertaining area (with sofa bed), in addition to varying features: Classics offer views of the Art Deco wing and single king or two double beds; Superiors include courtyard pool views and single kings; and the sprawling Betsy Royal Suites, with Atlantic Ocean and Lummus Park views, feature single king beds and oversized bathrooms with double sinks. In the Art Deco wing, find Atrium Balcony Suites overlooking–you guessed it–the Atrium courtyard, offering single king beds and loveseats; larger Atrium Double Balcony Suites offer outdoor access from the living room or bedroom, and single kings; Collins Double Balconies are the same, but with views of the Art Deco neighborhood instead; and Corner Double Balconies, though similar, turn one of these decks into a wraparound treat. Lastly, the premier Skyline Bungalow Suites feature one enormous wraparound terrace and two TV’s. Have you ever heard of suite options so sweet?
If you thought Betsy’s grandeur had ceased, think again: she outdoes herself in the Skyline Penthouse Suite with Terrace. Get cooking in your personal kitchenette in the living area, or crank out a tune on your baby grand piano. Plus, the wraparound terrace is straight up HUGE, so prepare to sit back and soak in stellar sunsets over Miami’s skyline. Not too shabby, Bets.
