Situated on 15 seaside acres in posh Newport Beach, Balboa Bay Resort will incite giddiness in the Kind Traveler looking to relax in the California sun.
The Setting
Stretched out on 15 seaside acres in posh Newport Beach is Balboa Bay Resort. This airy, Mediterranean style resort exudes casual elegance and timeless style. The resort incorporates the colors of the sea, sand and sky along with natural materials and modern furnishings, so expect to find yourself steeped in coastal luxury.
Situated on the famed Pacific Coast Highway and overlooking the serene Balboa Bay and a sea of luxury yachts, this hotel should incite giddiness in the Kind Traveler looking to relax in the California sun. Whether you take a relaxing cruise in an electric Duffy boat with a crisp white wine, or kayak your way around the bay, you'll have a hard time remembering if you’re in California or the glamorous Italian Riviera. Throw in for good measure, a refined dining experience at its captivating waterfront restaurant or a craft beer at the rustic bayside gastropub.
Sleep and Sanctuary
All 160 spacious rooms and suites at Balboa Bay are a product designed of their environment, an environment that includes sparkling waterfronts, pastel sunsets and the occasional multi-million dollar yacht parked outside your balcony. Think rich espresso wood bed frames, plush white luxurious bedding, wicker accents, plantation shutters, beige and seaside hues throughout, deep soaking tubs, marble bathrooms, 42” high-def TV’s, and last but not least, your own private balcony. A daily resort fee covers your WiFi. Slip on that heavenly robe, drink in the morning seaside air and a relaxing cup of coffee on the balcony and plan your daily adventure. We’ll also accept slipping on the robe and drinking in the evening seaside air and a glass of wine, too.
Eat. Pray. Eat.
Casually refined waterfront dining is the name of the game at Balboa Bay Resort’s three dining outposts, and with all that bayfront splendor, can you blame them? With its sophisticated touch and nautical-inspired design, aptly-named Waterline is the place to reward your palate with seasonal water-to-table fare and delicious views of the marina. For an upscale gastropub vibe, A + O (meaning Anchors and Oceans) is the place to enjoy creative cocktails and shareable plates warmed by outdoor fire pits and spectacular sunsets. Not to mention, the craft brews that pour from their 10ft ironclad centerpiece tap system. Ahoy! For freshly brewed coffees, pastries and grab and go far for active Kind Travelers, be sure to check out Blend, the resident waterfront cafe open morning to evening. Rather grub and enjoy the views form your Bay View guestroom? Feel free to order room service 24/7.
Waterline -- The headlining restaurant at Balboa Bay helmed by chef Rachel Haggstrom presents a captivating experience and a unique water-to-table chef-driven concept. Enjoy your Butternut Squash Pappardelle with dandelion pesto, pine nuts, butternut squash and gluten-free homemade pasta (add Maine Lobster tail, if you so desire) in the elegant dining room with scenic harbor views or al fresco on the patio. Cheers the setting sun with a libation from the sophisticated bar menu and celebrate how good it is to travel kindly. Waterline is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch.
A & O -- This inviting gastropub is nothing but comfortable, picture antique ocean elements, rustic wood floors, reclaimed barn sliding walls, long communal tables and of course, the 10 ft iron clad craft beer tap. Enjoy your beer on the patio melting into the comfy rattan furniture as you warm yourself by the one of two fire pits and enjoy a snack like tuna poke or watermelon pico de gallo with jicama. With live music on the weekends, this just might be the perfect neighborhood watering hole (it also helps that the neighborhood is some of the most sought after real estate in all of California, too).
Blend -- This is your kinda all-in-one outpost. Enjoy that morning joe inside at a cozy table or on the patio with the ocean breeze. Nosh on bites like sandwiches, paninis, gelato, pastries and other on-the-go items. Order to go items for a picnic basket to take on your Duffy boat cruise around the bay and stock up on last minute sundries. Oh, also grab a bottle of fine wine too, that will be essential for the picnic basket. Meet you at the dock.
The Art of De-stressing
If the salty sweet air and southern California sun doesn’t quite calm enough, head in to the Spa at Balboa Bay Resort. This on-site sanctuary is a mecca for rejuvenation and relaxation. The newly restored 10,000 square foot spa and spa boutique combines a casual elegance and timeless style, with ten private rooms for massages and couples massages, body scrubs, skin care, spray tanning (hey, a good base is important), hydrotherapy as well as men's and women's relaxation lounges with cozy seating and fireplaces. Wait, it gets better, find yourself in the Eucalyptus steam room, the sauna or a relaxing whirlpool. After a day in the surf and sand, nothing would be better to maintain that glow than an Organic Bliss Facial Treatment. Sink into the treatment which includes exfoliation and masking incorporating organic herbs, flowers and tree essence. For an extra $25 tack on a ‘Hang Ten” treatment and get your toes pampered with vegan lotion rich in lemongrass and cooling peppermint.
This being southern California, fitness is always in top order and Balboa Bay has the goods. Their on-site 24 hour fitness studio is stocked with state-of-the-art fitness equipment from Precor and Paramount, including treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes, as well as free weights, exercise machines, steps, exercise balls, and mats for stretching and yoga.
You’re also more than welcome to de-stress using land and sea. The newly enhanced pool locale is perfect for relaxing in the sun and diving into a book or diving into a chic aquatic haven that is the epitome of bayside lifestyle. Other energizing activities well within reach are taking a relaxing cruise around the bay on an electric Duffy boat, or a paddle board and kayak if you’d much prefer human propulsion. You can also rent an electric Pedego bike and cruise up the PCH and Balboa Peninsula. Ah, so many things, so little time.
